AC-130U: Example 2: Shared Radio Access using the Radio Server
Requirements
- Provide a simulated radio model with shared radio access for operators located on dispersed network nodes
- Provide an interface that links the simulation host system to the ASTi communications software model, for dynamic control of operator-radio matrix assignments
Referring to the communications matrix in Figure 2, "Example 2": establish a shared link to the on-board SATCOM radio for the Pilot and EWO.
The key ingredient to this solution is the ASTi Radio Server. This node is configured to model all of the on-board and off-board DIS radios. Each radio is connected to a dedicated DIS Intercom with a specific channel assignment. Operators access these central radios by communicating through DIS intercoms tuned to these specific channels.
Figure 4: ASTi Radio Server - Shared Radio Access
Refer to Figure 4:
- The simulation host sends data packets containing communications control parameters to ASTi Node 1 (Pilot) and Node 2 (EWO). Model Builder software extracts control parameters and sets the virtual intercom channel assignments for both operators to the SATCOM Bus. The host also sends radio parameters to the ASTi Radio Server Node, setting the SATCOM radio parameters (tuned frequency, world location, transmit power, crypto keys, etc.).
- Pilot or EWO activates his PTT and transmits analog voice to the RIU.
- The RIU converts the voice stream into a digital TDM stream. The TDM digital signal processor (DSP) receives the stream. Model Builder links the voice stream to the SATCOM Bus.
- Model Builder transmits SATCOM Bus intercom voice packets onto the local DIS network.
- The Radio Server receives DIS voice packets. Model Builder links the voice stream to the SATCOM Bus intercom. The SATCOM Bus voice stream keys the SATCOM Radio for transmission.
- The SATCOM Radio transmits packets onto the DIS local area network, to routers and on to the DIS wide area network. Long haul communications are established with networked DIS SATCOM radios with compatible settings (matching DIS exercise, geographically in-range, matching tune frequency and crypto variables).
