AC-130U: Example 3: Local and Wide-Area Radio Links using the Radio Server

Requirements

  • Provide a simulated radio model with shared or individual radio access for operators located on dispersed network nodes
  • The model must provide local links between on-board and off-board radios, modeled in the Radio Server
  • Provide an interface that links the simulation host system to the ASTi communications software model, for dynamic control of operator-radio matrix assignments
Referring to the communications matrix in Figure 2, "Example 3": assign VHF 1 (on-board radio) access to the Copilot and VHF A (off-board radio) access to Instructor 1.
Figure 5
Figure 5: ASTi Radio Server - Local and Wide-Area Radio Comms
Refer to Figure 5:
  1. The simulation host sends data packets containing communications control parameters to ASTi Node 1 (Copilot) and Node 2 (Instructor 1). Model Builder software extracts control parameters and sets the virtual intercom channel assignments to: Copilot - VHF 1 Bus and Instructor 1 - VHF A Bus. The host also sends radio parameters to the ASTi Radio Server Node, setting the VHF 1 and VHF A radio parameters (tuned frequency, world location, transmit power, etc.). The two radios are assumed to have in-range and in-tune settings.

  2. The Copilot activates his PTT and transmits analog voice to the RIU.

  3. The RIU converts the voice stream into a digital TDM stream. The TDM digital signal processor (DSP) receives the stream. Model Builder links the voice stream to the VHF 1 Bus.

  4. Model Builder transmits VHF 1 Bus intercom voice packets onto the local DIS network.

  5. The Radio Server receives DIS voice packets. Model Builder links the voice stream to the VHF 1 Bus intercom. The VHF Bus voice stream keys the VHF 1 Radio for transmission. The VHF 1 Radio transmits packets onto the wide area DIS network. Communications are established with networked DIS VHF radios with compatible settings (matching DIS exercise, geographically in-range, matching tune frequency and crypto variables).

  6. VHF A Radio receives VHF 1 communications and keys the VHF A Bus intercom.

  7. Model Builder transmits VHF A Bus voice packets onto the local DIS network.

  8. Operator Node 2 receives DIS voice packets. Model Builder links the voice stream to the Main Intercom.

  9. Model Builder distributes the digital audio to the TDM and RIU. The RIU converts the digital TDM voice stream into analog waveforms for distribution to Instructor 1 headset.
