In HLA mode, Model Builder communicates directly with ASTi's Telestra system. Telestra, responsible for incorporating the evolving HLA architecture, handles all of the objects and interactions within the HLA communications environment. Having Telestra handle all of the HLA interactions ensures that radio and intercom communications within Model Builder are not dependent upon the RTI used. Additionally, Model Builder is not required to assume the additional processing burden that is inherent when using HLA.

The same extensive range of radio propagation modeling available in DIS mode is also available when operating in HLA mode. Refer to the "Model Builder - DIS" section of this document for a description of the features available.

Within the HLA environment there is currently support for:

• Multiple Federations
• Simultaneous RTI-based and independent back channel communications
• Voice routing based on HLA federation number
• Dynamic Entity Attach
• Tactical Data Link messaging
• Interfacing with a Terrain or HF modeling Server
• Agile FOM Interface

Model Builder is capable of supporting both DIS and HLA communication modes on the same DACS. For many legacy DIS-based systems, upgrades to HLA may be performed without requiring expensive hardware upgrades. Additionally, converting existing models from DIS to HLA requires minimal effort.
