AWACS Modeling and Simulation System Upgrade
March 28, 2000 –
ASTi announced it will soon ship a highly-complex simulated radio and communications system to be used in the U.S. Air Force Distributed Mission Traning (DMT) program. This system is a follow-on to the Air Force's Air Education and Training Command's Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) Modeling and Simulation (AMS) system. ASTi previously supplied the radio and comms simulation system for the original AMS system (AMS I) in 1998.
The new ASTi system for the AMS II expansion provides 72 operator positions, each with multiple audio and direct digital interfaces to voice recognition equipment. Additionally, up to 24 real radios interface to the system for integration of virtual and live communications to real assets. Discrete digital interfaces provide activation and sensing of real radio controls. Two display and debrief stations bring the total number of interfaces to the ASTi system to 246.
The AMS II system features 5 network-capable simulated radios and 5 network intercom ports dedicated to each operator position, allowing the system to be completely reconfigured. Operators may be grouped to play in one large-scale exercise, or they may be allocated to several, smaller exercises.
The AMS II system also provides stand-alone training, whereby any operator station may be disconnected from the network, and an automated lesson conducted using a virtual dialogue from the AMS's voice recognition and voice synthesis system. The flexibility of the ASTi system allows easy connection to interfaces ranging from military gear, such as actual aircraft headsets, to commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) sound cards.
The entire AMS upgrade, including ASTi's communication system, will provide simulation of all AWACS mission systems, and will contain simulations of various model environments previously available only during actual flight.
