P-3C Orion Trainer Modernization
July 20, 2005 –
ASTi recently delivered the fourth of six shipments to Rockwell Collins Simulation and Training (Binghamton, NY) for use on U.S. Navy P-3C Orion Flight Simulators as part of a modernization program for these training devices. The P-3C simulators are deployed at diverse locations around the U.S. including Jacksonville, FL; Whidbey Island, WA; and in Hawaii. The remaining two shipments will be delivered before the end of the year.
Each of the P-3C simulators utilizes one ASTi Digital Audio Communication System (DACS) providing digital communications for crew voice and aircraft system tone cues, and a second DACS for aural cue generation. With its quad engines, propeller propulsion and older airframe, the P-3C platform presents challenging aural cueing requirements. Contracted to provide custom model development, ASTi worked closely with Rockwell Collins’ engineering team and fine-tuned the environmental audio to achieve an FAA Level-D capable system.
ASTi provided a full engineering service package with the first training device including: environmental cue model development, site integration support, post-delivery support, and a three-day training class for Rockwell Collins personnel at ASTi’s Herndon, VA facility.
