KC-135 HLA Follow-Ons
June 29, 2006 –
FlightSafety International (FSI) has again selected ASTi for the High Level Architecture (HLA) compliant KC-135 Stratotanker Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) simulators’ continuing proof-of-concept demonstration.
ASTi previously delivered two HLA-compliant communications platforms in 2005 for a proof-of-concept demonstration labeled “Phase 0”. Phase 0 featured two KC-135 OFTs networked via HLA at Altus AFB, OK. Communications included one UHF radio in each OFT, and an open communication channel between their respective instructor stations.
This follow-on order will support Phase 1 and Phase 2 of FSI’s ongoing HLA demonstration program. FSI purchased a total of three DACS and three Telestra platforms to support two additional OFTs and a new development & testing platform, all of which will be installed at McConnell AFB, KS. The goal of Phase 1 is to add VHF radio support in the OFTs, and allow a simulator technician to communicate with the instructor stations in the cockpits through the new development station. Phase 2 plans to link the OFTs at Altus AFB and McConnell AFB via a long-haul HLA connection.
Using one Digital Audio Communication System (DACS) and one Telestra platform per trainer, ASTi will supply a complete HLA audio solution with networked radios and intercoms. The ASTi Radio simulation object model (SOM) has been incorporated into FSI’s federation object model (FOM). This integration allows the end user to enjoy the flexibility offered by the HLA simulation standard, yet leverage ASTi’s specific expertise in radio and communications modeling.
