Telestra Simulated Satellite Communications Environment
Satcom Diagram
ASTi's Telestra SATCOM Server software, in combination with ASTi simulated radio objects, extends the simulated radio environment to include the effects of voice communications over satellite links.
This Telestra software package provides high-fidelity satellite communications modeling, including adjustable voice delays, uplink and downlink frequency modeling, half- or full-duplex communications channels, satellite positioning, channel allocation, and passband discrimination. These features provide both general SATCOM simulation effects and realistic simulation for a wide range of satellite communications modes such as:
  • 5kHz and 25kHz Dedicated
  • 5kHz DASA
  • 25kHz DC DASA
  • 5 KHz DAMA
  • 25 KHz AC DAMA
  • 25 KHz DC DAMA
Satellite simulation can support up to 255 simultaneous links, along with multiple exercises. Secure and frequency-hop communications modes are realistically maintained. For convenience and flexibility, a host interface provides the ability to set and modify specific parameters.
Why simulate the satellite and not just the delay effects? Representing just the delay is not an acceptable solution, particularly in the world of network exercises. The satellite is best modeled as an entity in its own right. In this way, other proper communications effects can occur such as line-of-sight, propagation, interference, jamming, and throughput restrictions.
In a network exercise, there may be dozens of radios (or more) "using" the virtual satellite. Having the satellite accurately modeled as a single entity means that appropriate and consistent effects can be applied to all radios in the exercise, ensuring interoperability, accuracy, and fair-fight conditions. In addition, satellite simulation parameters can be modified, properly affecting all SATCOM communications tied to the satellite in the exercise.
As with our other Telestra server packages, the SATCOM server software is highly flexible with capabilities to support radio and communications models:
  • Running locally in the Telestra MBV (Model Builder Visual) environment
  • Over the network on other networked Telestra platforms
  • Over the network on ASTi's popular DACS platforms
